Last year, the Kansas City Chiefs were the favorites from pre-season to game day, with odds starting at 6.00 and closing regular season at 4.50. The total number of bets placed on 2024’s Big Game with PlayNow was 61,000 and the Big Game was 2024’s second highest event for number of wagers. Will this season match those numbers?
For those new to sports betting, you can check out our beginner’s guide to betting on football. It covers everything from understanding the odds to exploring different markets including the money line, spread and over/under.
Introducing the teams
Kansas City and Philadelphia will face off in the Big Game for the second time in three years. Will the Chiefs get their “three-peat”, or will the Eagles claim their second title in franchise history?
Philadelphia Eagles
Key contributors to the Eagles’ road to the Big Game this year include Jalen Hurts, Saquon Barkley, and A.J. Brown. Saquon Barkley made a historic debut earlier this season, rushing for a franchise-record 255 yards against the Rams. The Eagles' offense is balanced, with Hurts' dual-threat capability and Barkley's powerful running, while their defense is strong with players like Jalen Carter and Zach Baun on the line, and Darius Slay in the secondary. Their balanced attack and strong offensive line are major advantages, though their reliance on big plays could be a potential weakness if the Chiefs’ defense can limit explosive plays.
Kansas City Chiefs
Kansas City had an outstanding regular season, finishing with a franchise-record 15 wins. Key players like Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelce, and Chris Jones have been instrumental in their success, leading the Chiefs to the Big Game for the third year running. Kansas City’s offense is one of the most explosive in the NFL, led by Mahomes' dynamic playmaking ability and Kelce's reliability as a top target. Defensively, they are strong up front with Chris Jones and George Karlaftis, and their secondary is hard to beat with Trent McDuffie and Justin Reid. However, their reliance on Mahomes and Kelce can be a potential weakness if either player is contained.
Key matchups to look out for
With Jason Kelce’s retirement last year, this Chiefs and Eagles rematch won’t feature the “battle of brothers” but there’s plenty other key matchups to look out for.
- Patrick Mahomes vs. Jalen Hurts: Both quarterbacks are dynamic playmakers and top MVP contenders. Mahomes' experience and ability to make plays under pressure will be crucial, while Hurts' dual-threat capability could challenge the Chiefs' defense
- Chiefs' offense vs. Eagles' defense: The Eagles have one of the best pass-rushing units in the league, with players like Jalen Carter and Zack Baun. Mahomes’ ability to navigate their strong pass rush was a key contributor to the 2023 win, and the Chiefs' offensive line will need to protect their QB to give him time to make plays
- Travis Kelce vs. Eagles' secondary: Kelce is a key target for Mahomes and the Eagles’ secondary had their hands full trying to contain him the last time these two teams faced off in the Big Game. How will they handle Kelce this time around?
- Eagles' running game vs. Chiefs' run defense: The Eagles have a strong running game, featuring Saquon Barkley and Jalen Hurts. The Chiefs' ability to stop the run on the day will be a significant factor in the game's outcome
Big Game betting markets
The most popular ways to bet on football include the money line, point spread, and totals. These markets, along with many others, are available for betting in the NFL's biggest game, as well as for each quarter and half of the game. You can also place player prop bets on key players, such as total passes completed or attempted, total passing yards, receptions, receiving yards, sacks, and more. Additionally, you can bet on touchdown scorers, including first, last, and total touchdowns.
Leading up to the Big Game, you can make outright bets on the Big Game MVP and novelties. You can also create a same game parlay, combining individual predictions from the same event into a single bet. While this offers greater odds at the outset, remember that all your picks must come through for your bet to win. During the game, live betting allows you to place bets in real time, with odds changing as quickly as the action on the field.
Novelty bets
It’s never too early to get ready for the Big Game. Leading up to the event, you can bet on iconic pop culture moments that will make watching more fun. Here are some of our favourite novelty bets.
PlayNow Sports tip: Place your bets when you’re ready, but remember that markets could be taken down at any time. Be sure to check PlayNow Sports for available markets and the latest odds.
Gatorade bath color
Since 2001 orange has been the preferred Gatorade colour of choice, dumped five times on the coach while red has not won once. Blue has been the most frequent colour since 2015, at four times. Is it finally red’s year?
Coin toss
Before the Big Game there is a ceremonial coin toss to determine which team will kick and receive to start the game. In the last 10, tails have gone 6-4 versus heads. Which side of the coin takes it this year?
Anthem length
Reba McEntire’s rendition of the Star-Spangled Banner clocked in at 100 seconds in 2024. Will you take the over or the under on the anthem length this year?
