Canadian hockey players in the NHL – how to bet on Canadian players, teams and more

It’s not just a game. It has never been. Not for Canadians. Since the late 1800s, when Lord Stanley donated the Stanley Cup for the top ice hockey team in our young nation and through the decades to follow, the sport of hockey has helped shape our national identity. Now with five Canadian teams in the 2025 NHL playoffs and hundreds of Canadian players in the league, there's no better time to wear our pride and bet on Canada.

Canadian teams in the NHL
There are seven Canadian teams in the NHL – and five have clinched a playoff spot in 2025. The Montreal Canadiens are the most successful team in Stanley Cup history (Canadian or otherwise!), having won the trophy 23 times, including a five-year winning streak from 1956 to 1960. The Toronto Maple Leafs are in second place with 13 Stanley Cup wins to their name, although their last victory came nearly sixty years ago in 1967. The Edmonton Oilers won the Stanley Cup five times in the 1980s but haven’t got their hands on the trophy since – could that change this year? The Calgary Flames won their first and only Stanley Cup in 1989 and the original Ottawa Senators won the Stanley Cup 11 times between 1903 and 1927.
The current franchise hasn’t come close to that success, nor have the Vancouver Canucks or the Winnipeg Jets. Vancouver has come the closest of the two – losing in the final three times, most recently in 2011. Can Winnipeg clinch it for Canada this year?
Canadian teams in the 2025 Stanley Cup playoffs
Winnipeg Jets
Regular season record: 55-22-4. The first team to clinch a playoff spot in 2025, Winnipeg have made the playoffs a total of 8 times in their 25 seasons but have never made the finals – will this be their year?
Ottawa Senators
Regular season record: 44-30-7. Ottawa have 16 playoffs in franchise history, with no wins to their name. Our national capital’s team is coached by Castlegar, BC-local; Travis Green
Montreal Canadiens
Regular season record: 39-31-11. Montreal hold the record for the most Stanley Cup wins. The Canadiens are also the most Canadian of all Canadian teams, with 61% of players hailing from the True North.
Toronto Maple Leafs
Regular season record: 51-26-4. Toronto have made the playoffs 73 times in their 107 seasons with 13 championship wins, making them the second most successful team in playoff history.
Edmonton Oilers
Regular season record: 47-29-5. Captained by 4 Nations-winning Canadian goal scorer Connor McDavid, Edmonton are back in the playoffs after a heartbreaking loss to Florida in game seven of the 2024 finals. The Oilers have the record for the most goals in a playoff series – 44 goals in round 3 of the conference finals against Chicago Blackhawks in 1985.
Canadian teams eliminated from this year’s playoffs

Vancouver Canucks
Regular season record: 38-29-14. With only two Canadian players on their roster, Vancouver are the least Canadian team in the NHL. Three fewer Canadians than last year – could this have impacted their playoff success?

Calgary Flames
Regular season record: 40-27-14. It’s been 36 years since Calgary’s last (and only) championship win. Coached by BC’s Ryan Huska, their 50% Canadian roster couldn’t quite carry the other half of the team.
